NAT National Air Transport USA United States

note

Founded by financier Clement Keys as mail service with the vision of providing airline service between New York, Detroit and Chicago. NAT was awarded Contract Air Mail route 3 in November 1925 which connected Chicago and Dallas Texas. Operations commenced in May next year using Curtiss Carrier Pigeon aircraft. In April 1927 NAT was awarded CAM route 17 from New York to Chicago. Service on this route commenced in September also using Curtiss Carrier. Boeing purchased airline in May 1930 through its holding company United Aircraft and Transport Company which also included Boeing Air Transport, Pratt and Whitney engine maker and Hamilton propeller manufacturer. All airlines under United Aircraft coordinated their schedule under "Boeing System" which later became United Air Lines. Mail Act of 1934 prevented manufacturers and airlines be one company and Boeing had to divest its airline holdings. NAT became part of newly established United Air Lines.
