note
Emery Air Freight was a freight forwarding company which began operations by shipping cargo on other carriers' scheduled and charter flights. In the 1970s, the company began to put together a dedicated fleet of aircraft which were operated by independent contractors. In September 1987, Emery acquired Purolator Courier, which operated a dedicated fleet of DC-9s and 727s flown by independent contractors. With the increased demand for time-sensitive cargo services, Consolidated Freightways decided to get into the business using its own fleet operated by independent contractors. In 1987 CF Airfreight acquired one of these contractors, Air Train, which operated two DC-8F-54s for the forwarder.
In April 1989 Consolidated Freightways acquired Emery, and the operations were combined under the "Emery Worldwide" banner. Air Train changed its name to Emery Worldwide Airlines and operated the fleet of DC-8s and eventually DC-10s. The company had planned to move the 727s over the the Emery certificate (one had been done), but this was quickly abandonned, and the aircraft remained with contractors.
Emery was awarded the Express Mail contract with the US Postal service in the 1990s, with aircraft operated by Ryan and Express One. In 2001, FedEx took over Express Mail flying resulting in a loss of much of its business. In August 2001, the airline's operating certificate was suspended by the FAA for maintenance violations. Parent CNF Transportation decided it would be too expensive to resume operations, so it decided to maintain existing operations using the contract aircraft.
