note

Purolator Courier can trace its roots back to New York-based Armored Carrier Corp., which was began operations in 1947. Its name was later changed to American Courier Corp, which in 1960 formed Canadian subsidiary, Trans Canada couriers which began operating in Ontario and Quebec. In 1967, the Purolator Corp, makers of automotive filters, bought American Courier, and the two companies were renamed Purolator Courier and Purolator Courier Ltd. The two companies depended on air-taxi companies to provide aircraft. When air cargo became deregulated, larger aircraft were used, however Purolator always used outside contractors to operate its airplanes. In the late 1980s, there were too many players in the overnight package business, and Purolator began looking for offers. In 1987 Purolator Corp was acquired by Emery Air Freight. The automotive filter business was sold, and the courier business in Canada was sold to Onex Corp. Emery essentially closed the Purolator operation when it folded it into its own system; It ceased operations in 2001. The Canadian business continued, with Canada Post acquiring 75% of the company in 1993, which increased to 96% in 1999. It opened a US division, Purolator Courier US Ltd (now Purolator USA) which specializes in shipments between the USA and Canada.
