Inter Austral Argentina

note

Second largest airline in Argentina, Austral was founded when Aerotransportes Litoral Argentino and Austral Compania Argentina de Transportes Aereos merged in 1971. Austral serves domestic market from its hub at Jorge Newbery airport in Buenos Aires. Austral was at this time private enterprise owned by Cielos del Sur a holding company owned by Enrique Pescarmon. Cielos del Sur was sold to Iberia in March 1991. During the 1990s Iberia held controling interest in both Austral and its comeptitor Aerolineas Argentinas making Austral effectively Aerolineas Argentinas subsidiary as it was larger of both carriers. Austral changed its livery to reflect the fact that it was part of Iberia. In 2001 Spain's Grupo Marsans through its airline company Air Comet bought Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral. In September 2008 Austral has been nationalized by an act of parlament together with Aerolineas Argentinas as talks between Argentina Government and Grupo Marsans about boing out both airlines failed.
