FAMA and other early Argentinian airlines ALFA, Aeropostal and ZONDA operated airline service in the country since 1928. FAMA had an international route with a DC-4 to London since 1946. In 1949 Argentinian ministry of transportation formed Aerolineas Argentinas which took over before mentioned airlines. Airline begun its first jet service with Comet to London in 1958. In February 1965 Aerolineas Argentinas takes delivery of 4 Boeing 707s. In 1969 first of batch of Boeing 737s joins the fleet. First wide body aircraft - a Boeing 747 joins fleet in December 1976. In April 1979 company is nationalized. In June 1980 first trans-polar flight is conducted when a Boeing 747SP takes off from Buenos Aires via Rio Gallegos to Auckland New Zealand. In November 1990 IBERIA purchases majority share in the company. The first Airbus A340 joins the fleet in June 1999. In October 2001 Grupo Marsans buys the airline from IBERIA as well as domestic carrier Austral both of which are bankrupt. Gruppo Marsans also owned Air Comet of Spain and its Chilean sister company. In summer 2008 Argentina government took over Aerolineas Argentinas as the negotiations over proposed sale back to the government broke down as both parties could not agree on value of the company. In Europe AA serves Madrid and Rome. In Madrid a hub has been created for flights to London, Paris & Milan with smaller aircraft. North America is served through Miami and New York, and the South Pacific gateways are Auckland and Sydney. The airline also operates an extensive domestic network and serves the following cities in South America: Bogota, Lima, Caracas, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Asuncion, Parana, Santiago de Chile, Porto Alegre and Montevideo. In November 2010 Aerolineas Argentinas joins Sky Team airline alliance.
