note
Air Florida was founded in November 1971 and began operations on September 29, 1972, as an intra-state carrier operating Lockheed Electras and a Boeing 727, and eventually DC-9-15 (RC)s. With US deregulation, the airline received its certificate and began interstate and eventually transatlantic services. The original fleet was replaced with Boeing 737s and 727-200s, while some second-hand DC-10-30s were acquired for overseas work. Air Florida entered the Northeast-Florida market after the deregulation of 1978 and international service to London, Shannon, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Amsterdam in Europe, the Bahamas, the West Indies, and Costa Rica. Air Florida acquired a small stake in Western Airlines to gain a foothold in the western United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company filed for bankruptcy in July 1984. It was acquired by Midway Airlines later that year and continued to operate Air Florida separately as Midway Express. Midway and Midway Express were merged by 1987.
