note
One of the first post-deregulation carriers, began operating October 31, 1979 as a low-fare carrier from Chicago-Midway to Cleveland, Detroit, and Kansas City with three used DC-9s. Switched marketing strategies and launched "Midway Metrolink" on June 19, 1983, which offered a first-class cabin with upgraded ammenities at coach fares. Metrolink lost money, so in 1985 switched to a two-class operation (Metrolink/Metroclub). Purchased certain Air Florida assets in October 1984, and operated Air Florida separately as "Midway Express" as a low-fare carrier (eventually merged) between Chicago, Florida and US Virgin Islands. A north/south Philadelphia hub was established in 1989 after Eastern sold its operations at Philadelphia along with 18 DC-9 aircraft. This operation was sold to USAir in 1991. Filed for bankruptcy March 26, 1991.
