Although Hainan Provincial Airlines was proposed already in 1989, operations did not commence until May 1993 as Hainan Airlines. Hainan Airlines is largest 100% privately held airline and 4th largest Chinese Airline. Hainan Airlines operates dense domestic network out of its hubs in Haikou and Beijing as well as International service. Berlin, Budapest, Brussels, Kiev, St Petersburg and Moscow are served in Europe. Krasnoyarks, Irkutsk, Astana and Novosibirsk are served in central Asia, Dubai, Khartoum and Luanda in Middle East and Africa as well as Bangkok, Busan, Osaka, Taipei and Chengdu in south and east Asia. Sydney is served from Haikou and Istanbul from Urumuqi. Hainan strategy in international market is to find niche markets. Since 2000 Hainan Airlines is owned by Hainan Group which is partly owned by George Soros and Hainan Government. In June 2009 Hainan airlines entered north american market when it introduced Beijing - Seattle route. Toronto was added and Zurich in May 2011. Hainan Airlines also operates executive jet and airline charters and employes close to 10,000 people and carried over 14 million passengers in 2008.
