note
ATI was formed by the owners of United Air Leasing, which operated DC-8s aircraft under contract to the automobile industry. It received its operating certificate January 17, 1985 to operate cargo charters. It ceased operations in October 1985 since its DC-8s were not Stage 3 compliant, and further exemptions to noise rules could not be obtained. In March 1986, a new certificate was obtained but never used. In July 1988, new FAA and DOT certificates were obtained, and the airline resumed operations. The airline soon acquired assets of bankrupt Interstate Airlines.
ATI's owner purchased International Charter Xpress in 1993 and merged it with ATI on September 15, 1994. ICX operated US Mobility Command charters using DC-8-62 Combis, a contract which ATI maintains today. In 1998 the airline as acquired by Brink's, which also owned Burlington Air Freight, and several DC-8s were operatoed for the freight forwarder. When BAX Golbal was sold to Deutsche Bahn in November 2005, ATI was acquired by Cargo Holdings International, which also owned Capital Cargo International, and Cargo Aircraft Management, a leasing company. On December 31, 2007, Cargo Holdings International was acquired by ABX Holdings, which was reorganized as Air Transport Services Group.
In 2013 ATI and Capital Cargo were merged. Outside of the military charters now operated by 757 Combis, it operates ACMI cargo services for DHL and well as freighter services for other airlines.
