Regional scheduled passenger and cargo operator founded in 168 by Michel Marchais. Company grew into 4 largest airline in France by 1980s and operated regional flights on behalf of both Air Inter and Air France. In 1984 Transport Aerien Transregional name was adopted. In 1992 British Airways acquired 49.9% interest. In 1995 renamed TAT European Airlines to reflect its growing scope of operations. In 1996 British Airways became full owner of the airline and renamed it TAT European Airlines. In 1997 British Airways merged TAT European with Air Liberte. The new airline retained name Air Liberte. TAT Group then diversified into express freight services, aircraft maintenance and leasing. The group employs 3,600 people worldwide, and is the leading European independent MRO provider.
