note
Air Micronesia was formed as a joint venture between Continental Airlines (31% ownership), Aloha Airlines (20%), and the United Micronesia Development Corp. (49%). Originally based in Saipan, it began operations May 16, 1968 using Boeing 727, DC-6, Grumman Albatross aircraft. Flights operated within the Micronesia region as well as to Honolulu. The airline had no FAA certificate of its own, so operations were conducted by Continental. Eventually, services were expanded to Asian destinations, including Japan and the Philippines. In 1987 it became an independent company, 100% owned by UMDC. Following the second Continental bankruptcy, a new airline was created: Continental Micronesia. The certificate authority of Air Micronesia was transferred to the new airline, as was Continental's foreign route authority in the region. Continental Micronesia acquired its own FAA operating certificate. After Continental's merger with United, all certificate authority was transferred to United.
