Lauda Air was founded in 1979 by Formula 1 champion Niki Lauda who always had an interest in aviation and holds an ATP license. Airline commenced charter operations with Fokker F-27 aircraft. Breakthrough came in 1985 when Lauda Air formed alliance with tour operator ITAS and leased 2 BAC-111s from Tarom, its first pure jet. In 1988 scheduled service to Sydney via Bangkok and Hong Kong is launched using Boeing 767 aircraft. In 1992 Vienna - Munich - Miami scheduled service is introduced. In 1993 charter subsidiary Lauda Air Italy SpA is launched and based in Milan. Scheduled flights to Los Angeles via Munich with cooperation with Lufthansa are innaugurated. In 1994 first Canadair Regional Jets join the fleet and scheduled service to Spain, Brussels, Stockholm and England is innaugurated. In March 2000 Lauda Air becomes member of Star Alliance, and in December, became a wholly owned subsidiary of Austrian Airlines. Flight services were merged with Austrian in 2005, but the Lauda Air brand was maintained for charter flights. The two airlines officially merged on July 1, 2012. Branding was retired in March 2013.
