Flag carrier of Angola was formed as DTA and begun operations using De Havilland Dragon Rapides. In July 1940 airline started its scheduled service. Domestic routes Luanda - Pointe Nore, Lobito - Mossamedes, Lobito - Nova Lisboa were established. In 1946 first Douglas DC-3s joined the fleet and were in use until 1975. In 1951 DTA joined IATA. First turboprop aircraft, a Fokker F-27 Friendship, joined the flee in 1962. Airline adpoted current title TAAG in 1973 after Angola gained independence. International routes to Sao Tome and Windhoek were established.
In November 1975 airline received its first jet, a Boeing 737. In 1977 TAAG leased its first Boeing 707 from British Caledonian. The same year TAAG also acquired Soviet built airliners Yakovlev Yak-40s and Antonov An-26s.
In 1991 TAAG established its charter and air-taxi subsidiary Angola Air Charter.
On November 11th 2006 (Angolas Independence anniversary) TAAG received 3 new Boeing 737-700s and 2 new Boeing 777 one of which made world record non-stop flight from Seattle to Luanda in 16hrs and 40 minutes.
TAAG serves dense domestic network. Its International service include Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Windhoek, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, Dubai (starting 2009), Bangui, Addis Ababa, Douala. However, in June 2007 EU banned TAAG from flying in Europe because of its poor safety standards. TAAG contracted SAA on its Lisbon route since. In May 2009 TAAG passed IATA standard.
