Flag carrier of Portugal founded by Portuguese civil aviation authority in 1944. First flight was operated on September 19 1946 from Lisbon to Madrid using a Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Between 1953 and 1975, TAP was in private hands. First jet aircraft was a Caravelle delivered in July 1962. First wide-body airliner, a 747-200 was delivered in December 1971. Lockheed TriStars formed TAPs long haul fleet between 1983 and 1994.
During the 1990s, TAP underwent massive renewal. First long-range Airbus A340 joined the fleet in December 1994. In 1997 TAP purchases new Airbus A320 family aircraft flight simulator and massive restructuring began culminating in 2003 when TAP turned profitable again. TAP introduces new image and its maintenance facilities are certified by JAR, FAA and Brazil Civil Aviation Administration. TAP is invited to join Star Alliance, world's premier Airline Alliance and becomes member in March 2005. TAP Portugal is 100% owned by TAP Group which also holds 100% stake in Portugalia, 20% stake in Air Macau through SEAP.
Airline serves European capitals and industrial centers with Porto and Lisbon. Prague, Budapest and Zagreb are served in Central Europe. TAP serves many cities in Brazil, Caracas as well as Newark in the USA and Casablanca, Sao Tome, Luanda, Maputo, Bissau, Sal and Dakar in Africa.
Airline acquired regional carrier Portugalia in 2006.
In June 2015 government sold its 61% stake in the carrier to the Atlantic Gateway consortium which is controlled by founder of JetBlue/Azul David Neeleman and Portuguese bus company owner Humberto Pedrosa. In November 2015 TAP announced fleet renewal order with Airbus for 14 A330-900neos, 15 A320neos and 24 A321neos worth $8.5billion. TAP Express formed 2016 as LCC/Regional subsidiary, commenced ops 27 Mar 2016. Ceased A340 ops 28 Oct 2019
