Swedish shipping company Salenia AB together with Loftleidir Air Cargo formed Cargolux to provide worldwide cargo operations. First aircraft used by Cargolux was Canadair CL-44 which commenced operations on May 11 1970. All continets were being served from the begining. First jet in the fleet was a DC-8 leased in 1973 from Loftleidir. DC-8 became only type used until 1980 when first 747 was delivered. 747 became the only type used by Cargolux. In 1988 Luxair and Cargolux formed passenger charter airline Lionair. This venture was a failure, however and was shortly liquidated. Cargolux flies scheduled cargo flights worldwide from its base at Findel Airport. It is one of the most succesful and innovative cargo-only airline in the world.
