Luxair Société Luxembourgeoise de Navigation Aérienne SA was founded with the help of Luxembourg government to replace failed Luxembourg Airlines to become the flag carrier. Airline started operations with a Fokker F-27 to Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt from its base at Findel airport in Luxembourg in 1962. Jets were introduced in 1970 with a leased Sud Caravelle. Airline also operated long haul service to Johannesburg with Starliner, Boeing 707 , A300B and 747SP 1960's-1990's. Airline received its first Boeing 737 Next Generations in February 2004. In 2007, airline reintroduced turboprop aircraft to its fleet when it took delivery of its first Bombardier DHC-8-400Q aircraft. Airline is owned partly by the government (21%) and rest is held by private interest, including 13% by Lufthansa. Currently airline operates scheduled flights to central and western european capitals, Canary Islands and Tunis from Luxembourg as well as Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Vienna, Barcelona and Rome from Saarbrucken. Airline also operates leisure charter flights on behalf of its subsidiary LuxairTours to the mediterranean resorts. Airline employs just over 2000 people.
