note
Kitty Hawk Airways began operations in 1976 as a Dallas- based air taxi service. In 1985, Tom Christopher, who owned an air freight charter service (Christopher Charters), and one of Kitty Hawk's biggest customers purchased the company. Kalitta Flying Service was started in 1967 by Conrad Kalitta, and operated passenger and cargo charters with small aircraft from bases in Ypsilanti and Morrisville TN. On November 19, 1997, the Kitty Hawk Group acquired all of the Kalitta companies, and Kalitta Flying Service became Kitty Hawk Charters. Following Kitty Hawk's 2000 bankruptcy, the small aircraft business was sold to Doug Kalitta in December 2001, and the company was renamed Kalitta Charters.
