note

Non scheduled supplemental carrier founded by WWII pilot and pharmacist Stanley Weiss and Colonel Charles Sherman. C Sherman left early however and founded California Central Airlines which operated coach service between Oakland and Burbank. Original intention was to acquire a surplus C-47/C-46 and fly freight. But this has changed almost immediately upon formation of the company. First flight was operated in January 1946 on Long Beach - Kansas Cirty - New York route using a surplus C-47. Name was changed to Standard Air Lines the same year. C Sherman was replaced by James Fischgrund at this point. To circumvent C.A.B. regulations which stipulated that only 8 or 3 runs can be operated on the same sector per month by a non scheduled carrier, Mr Weiss set up a ticketing agency North American Airlines which sold tickets but contracted number of non scheduled carriers that performed the flights. Standard Air Lines, Viking Air Lines, Twentieth Century Airlines and Hemisphere Airlines were among them. Under the pressure from the large scheduled airlines and lengthy legal battles C.A.B. finally managed to shut them down in 1957. The very issues raised by NAA were later argued to pass the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act.
