note
Airline was formed when Alaska International Air and Great Northern Airlines merged in 1984. Airline grew steadily and entered code share agreement with Alaska Airlines. MarkAir formed feeder service Markair Express operating out of Anchorage. Alaska withdrew from the code shared agreement in 1990. Markair decided to compete with Alaska Airlines directly and entered its new rival's most lucrative including flights to "lower 48". San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Denver were added to its schedule. The increased competition on Alaska's trunk routes proved economicly unsustainable and weaker MarkAir had to cease most jet service by 1992. MarkAir attempted to establish new hub at Denver. In October 1995 MarkAir ceased to operate and its assets were sold in bankruptcy proceedings to Wexford Capital Management (Republic Airways Holdings). MarkAir Express continued to operate turboprop service in Alaska until 1997 when it was restructured into Alaska Central Express an all cargo airline.
