Airline was established by Peru government to replace Aerolineas Peruanas SAPSA and military controled SATCO as national airline. It used ex-SATCO Fokker F28 for domestic routes and leased DC-8s from VIASA for international destinations. Airline was privatized July 1981. In 1990 Aeromexico purchased 47% stake in Aeroperu. Aeroperu had financial difficulties throughout its life and in 1996 suffered two major losses of aircraft due to negligence. Airline ceased operations in March1999.
