OLT was founded by Martin Dekker and Jan Janssen as air taxi service connecting Sylt and other German resorts in northern sea from Emden using KZ VII Lark aircraft. In 1970s regular service between Emden, Bremen and Hamburg was introduced and name Air Taxi was used, however in 1972 company changed name to OLT. Kassel, Düsseldorf and Cologne (1973), Hanover, Stuttgart, Saarbrücken, Münster / Osnabrück and Frankfurt were served on regular basis in addition to its island service. Shipping company Visser & van Doornum and Aktiengesellschaft für Verkehrswesen (AGIV) became shareholders.
Today OLT Express operates scheduled airline service throughout Germany and Bristol, Copenhagen, Brussels, Zurich, Toulouse and Naples (2009) are served from its base in Bremen. After the unification of Germany, OLT also opened hub at former East German resort of Usedom.
Airline is one of the oldest in Germany and is owned by north german Reederei AG "EMS". In 2011
company has been acquired by Polish investment group Amber Gold which started charter airline Yes Airways later renamed OLT Express Poland/Regional. In July 2012 its sister company in Poland ceased operations. OLT Express Germany continues operations albeit its expansion plans has been halted after it acquired Stuttgart based Contact Air earlier that month.
