note
Division of Waterman Steamship Co. Airline was founded by Caroll B. Waterman, accomplished Navy flier and son of WSC founder .
Because of small size of Alabama, the intra-state airline business did not generate enough traffic. Civil Aeronautics Board did not approve interstate and international service for the airline. While waiting for the CAB approval, Waterman operated air charter service using DC-4s. During this time, Waterman became first airline to fly commercial air service between USA and South Africa. Service was flown from La Guardia NY to San Juan PR, Natal in Brazil, Ascencion Island Leopoldville and Johannesburg. Waterman also flew charters to Europe/Saudi Arabia and Hawaii. Airline acquired TWA's stake in TACA International in 1947and focused on developing that airline instead. Airline ceased its own operations in 1948. Waterman also help set up BWIA and Aerovias Brasil airlines.
