Company can trace its history to Nationwide Air Charter (Pty) Ltd formed in 1991. In 1994 company receives its first aircraft BAC 1-11 one in passenger and one in cargo configuration. Airline commenced operations in December 1995 after it took over Care Airline which operated scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Margate.
Airline was renamed Nationwide Airlines and commenced scheduled passenger flights serving Port Elizabeth, George, East London and Durban. Between 1997 and 1999 airline marketed its flights as SABENA Nationwide because it entered into code sharing agreement with the Belgian flag carrier. In April 2001 first international route is introduced when Livingstone in Zambia is added to its network. In November 2003 airline introduces its first long-haul flights to London Gatwick and later Atlanta using Boeing 767 aircraft. Airline adopts low-cost no frills business model on its domestic flights. Business class is maintained on its international operations.
On November 29th 2007 airline's AOC is revoked. Airline resumed flights one week later. On Aprils 29th 2008 airline ceased operations due to cash flow problems blamed on rising fuel costs and declining passenger loads. Soon after airline went into liquidation.
Nationwide Air also provided maintenance, aircraft support and charter.
