National airline of Namibia was established as Suidwes Lugdiens and commenced operations in 1947. In 1959 Oryx Aviation was acquired. Airline purchased Walvis Bay based Air Namib and adopted this name in 1978. Airline was nationalized in 1982. In 1989 first direct service from Windhoek to Johannesburg is inaugurated. Namibia became independent country in 1990 and as result airline changed its name to Air Namibia year later as it became flag carrier. Airline provides domestic, regional (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Victoria Falls, Luanda) and long-haul service to Frankfurt and London since 1990. Europe was initially served using Boeing 747SPs, which were upgraded to 747-400s in mixed Cargo/passenger configuration in 1999. Since 2005, Air Namibia used Airbus A340s on its long-haul flights, replaced with A330-200's in 2013. Airline liquidated by Namibian Govt 21 Feb 2021 due financial problems
