MDW JI Midway Airlines Midway USA United States

note

Formed by Jet Express which operated feeder service for TWA and USAir in the 1980s and early 1990s. Airline initially operated flights out of Chicago Midway airport, hence its name, but soon changed strategy and moved to North Carolina and set up hub at Raleigh-Durham airport. American Airlines withdrew from Raleigh-Durham hub and Midway fill the gap. At peak, they operated 200 daily departures from Raleigh. Financial difficulties prior to the September 11 forced airline to file for bankruptcy in August 2001. Financial help of $12m from the government to help airlines affected by the 9/11 events helped to resurrect the airline, but the airline could not turn profit and folded. All flights were abruptly discontinued on July 17th 2002. Airline never restarted operations with Boeing 737s. Wexford Capital financial help enable airline to resume operations between February and October 2003 when they operated their CRJ-200s as US Airways Express feeder from Washington National and Raleigh-Durham.
