The Learjet was a development of the failed Swiss ground-attack aircraft, the FFA P-16. William Powell Lear Jr. saw potential of the design and purchased the tooling for the aircraft. Production was moved to Wichita Kansas in 1962. Production of the first Learjet began on 07/02/63. Company adopted the name Lear Jet Corporation in 1964. The first aircraft made its maiden flight on 07/10/63. First production aircraft was delivered 12 months later. The company merged with Gates Aviation in 1969 and was renamed Gates Learjet Corporation until acquired by Integrated Acquisition in 1987 and renamed once more to Learjet Corporation in 1988. The company changed hands yet again in 1990 when it was purchased by Bombardier Aerospace. In February 2021, Bombardier announced the end of production of its LEARJET line of business jets. The last Learjet was built in March 2022 with matching FAA N number 2022L
