The airline was established and started operations in September 1976 as Lao Aviation using assets of its predecessors Royal Air Lao and Laos Air Lines. The name was changed to Lao Airlines in early 2003. The airline is wholly owned by the government of Laos.
In 2012 airline served Bangkok, Chian Mai, Hanoi, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh city on its international network as well as 7 domestic destinations. Guangzhou and Danang are planned future destinations.
