Formed as Air Section, 1st Battalion Rhodesia Regiment , later Southern Rhodesia Air Force, Later Royal Rhodesian Air Force, prefix "Royal" dropped in 1970, became Air Force of Zimbabwe 1980 Currently (2012) operates between 60-80 fixed wing aircraft and 30 helicopters. Flying status unknown due to lack of spares and currency to maintain airworthiness. Approx 5000 personell.
News article : It has been established that the AFZ has at least 18 planes out of service due to a shortage of spare parts while some have been lost in operations. These include three Lynx helicopters, two Alouette helicopters, and two Hind helicopter gunships. The AFZ's four British-made Hawk fighter planes are all grounded due to shortage of spare parts following an arms embargo imposed by Whitehall. Three F-7 fighters are believed to have crashed after being sent to the DRC . The other planes which are not operational include an AB412 helicopter and two Casa 212 transporters.
