Flag carrier of Libya. Airline was founded when Libravia and United Libyan Airlines were taken over by government. New airline was named Kingdom of Libya Airlines and begun operations year later with Sud Caravelle on International and Fokker F-27 on domestic network. In September 1969 when military ousted the King, airline was renamed to present title LAA - Libyan Arab Airlines. Airline also used Jamahiriya LAA title. Between 1992 - 1999 international flights were suspended due to UN embargo which was placed in because of Libya's government involvement in Pan Am 747 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988. Airline's 1980s equipment of Boeing 707s, 727s, Fokker F-27s and IL-76s aged and fell into disrepair. After sanctions were lifted in 1999, airline had to modernize its fleet. Airbus A300s and A320s were leased. First International flight was operated in April 1999 to Amman from Tripoli. Airline grounded Mar 2011 due to unrest in Libya. At least one A300 destroyed on ground Tripoli Aug 2011. Resumed normal operations mid-2012. Operations again interrupted due to conflict in Libya Jul 2014 with at least three LAA aircraft destroyed at Tripoli.
