Airline was founded as Alisarda by his highness Shah Karīm al-Hussaynī who is Agha Khan IV since 1957. Airline commenced operations in 1964 between its home base of Olbia in Sardinia and points in Italy. Airline has focused on domestic and charter service to and from Sardinia. In 1991 the name Meridiana was adopted to better reflect growing scope of its operations. In 2006 the airline acquired a major stake in Eurofly and it was fully to integrated to the Meridiana brand in February 2010. In December 2017 company started scheduled service from Milano Malpensa to Roma, Napoli, Palermo, Catania and Lamezia Terme.
In February 2018 Meridiana was officially rebranded as Air Italy and flight operations commenced on 01/03/18.
The same year airline introduced scheduled low fare long haul flights from Milan Malpensa to New York, Miami, Havana, Zanzibar, Mombasa and Bangkok (9/18) using Airbus A330s. Lagos, Accra, Cairo and Moscow are served with 737-8 MAX. airline ceased ops on 11 Feb 2020
