Service was established in 1928 at Cloncurry Base as a Frontier Medical Service using hired De Havilland DH.50 aircraft. Idea was brainchild of South Australia's Presbyratian minister John Flynn who also helped to organized radio communication throughout Australia's outback called Wireless Service in 1929. In August 1934 section in Victoria was established and two years later in Western Australia. Queensland section was established in April 1939. By November 1939 service became national institution using 6 aircraft, each with a pilot and a doctor, and 200 radio stations throughout all states were in place.. In 1955 name Royal Flying Doctor Service was adopted. In 2010 RFDS served over 7 million square kilometers and made over 100 patient transports and over 750 patient contacts daily using 60 aircraft and 21 bases.
