First all cargo commercial carrier founded by World War II pilot and Yale graduate Earl F Slick. In January 1946, Earl and his brother Tom Slick, founded Slick Airways and began operations in March 1946 using ten war surpluss Curtiss C-46s. In March 1953 Slick Airways was to merge with another preeminent post world war II cargo operator Flying Tigers but the deal was called off by CAB. Airline also commissioned military contracts to fly cargo route San Francisco - Manila with a Canadair CL-44D4-6. Airline was participating in US Navy Quicktrans logistics support program which later became Logair of US Air Force. Financial difficulties forced Slick to diversify company and Illinois Shade Cloth Co. was acquired along with Drew Chemical Co. Airline became a holding company and sold its airline business to Airlift International for a stake in the airline.
