Regional airline founded as Hadag Air in 1974 to provide scheduled service to Frisian Islands. Company changed name to Holiday Express in 1984 to reflect its Westland and Helgoland German resorts network. Briefly ceased operations from April 2 to June 22, 1987, before restarting operations as Hanse Express. Hamburg Airlines trade name was adopted in April 1988 when airline decided to start International operations. During the 1990s airline operated network that included a hub in Berlin (Tempelhoff) and Riga, Vilnius, Minsk, Amsterdam, Brussels, Porto, Lisboa, Saarbrucken, Dresden, and Dublin. Company was loosing money and suspended operations for a short time in 1993. In 1997 Augsburg Airways expressed interest in purchasing the fledging carrier, but the deal did not go through and Hamburg Airlines was liquidated at the end of 1997. At the time of closure, company employed cca 300 people. Company was owned by hotel and restaurant entrepreneur Eugen Block.
