Airline was founded as joint venture of three governments, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Nyasaland (Malawi) Airline was divided to three subsiduaries in 1963 when Central African Federation dissolved. Zambia Airways, Air Rhodesia and Air Malawi were formed as divisions of CAA. Rhodesia declared its independency in November 1965 and CAA was broken up in September 1967. Air Rhodesia was formed as its successor. Airline became Air Zimbabwe Rhodesia in 1979 and in February 1980 name was shortened to Air Zimbabwe.
