For many years Guyana Airways was national airline of Guyana. Company was founded by Art J Williams and Harry Wendt in 1939 as British Guyana Airways using Ireland flying boats. Althought it was a private venture, the colonial government provided subsidies. In the 1940s Grumman Goose were operated.
In July 1955 the colonial government bought BGA. At this time BWIA provided management assistance. In September 1963 the name was shortened to Guyana Airways. In May 1966 Guyana became independent nation. Airline traditionaly served dense domestic network and Miami, New York, Port of Spain, and Barbados.
British Airways provided management assistance in the 1980s. In 1982, Guyana Airways operated direct service between Paramaribo and New York using Boeing 707. In 1996 Toronto was added to its schedule.
Guyana Airways ceased operations in 1999 and new company called Guyana Air 2000 was formed using its assets including the head office but not the aircraft. GA 2000 commenced operations in June 1999, but was seriously under capitalized from start and went into receivership already in May 2001.
