In 1938 KLM formed Indonesian airline KNILM. In December 1949 Dutch government and Indonesia government formed Indonesia's national airline Garuda with the assets of KNILM which ceased to exist. Like many other airlines, Garuda started operations with war surplus Douglas DC-3s. Garuda also used Convair Catalinas and in September 1950 first Convair CV-240 joined the fleet. In July 1954 Indonesian government took full ownership of the airline. First turboprop, a Lockheed Electra, was delivered in January 1961. Garuda was also one of handful airlines to order Convair CV-990 jets of which first example arrived in September 1963. The same year Garuda acquired domestic operator Merpati Nusantara, but preserved the brand. In 1965 Garuda inaugurated first European destination, Amsterdam. Indonesia's historic ties to the Netherlands made Garuda loyal Fokker customer. First Fokker F-27 joined the fleet in 1969 and was used on domestic network. Same year Douglas DC-9s began to arrive. In August 1971 first Fokker F-28. The type became backbone of Garuda's domestic operations for next 20 years and Garuda was the largest Fokker operator in Asia. Fist wide-body aircraft was a leased Douglas DC-10 which joined the fleet in 1973 and began to replace another Douglas product the DC-8s on Garuda's long-haul routes. Throughout 1980s Garuda flew mixture of DC-10s, Airbus A300s and Boeing 747s to Australia, Europe with technical stops in the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines. Regional network includes destinations in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2002 Garuda was put on list of airlines banned from operating in European Union, effectively ending Garuda's traditional routes to Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam. In 2009 Garuda approved to fly in Europe and starts again in 2010 Europe flight to Amsterdam via Dubai(In 2012 changed to Abu Dhabi with A330-200.In April 2014 Garuda changed A330-200 to B777-300ER for non-stop service.
