Although the company has Australian roots, it has become multinational corporation with over $8 billion worth of aircraft and revenue over $500 million. Company was founded as joint venture of Australia's leading logistics company TNT and News Corporation both owners of Australia's Ansett Airways at the time. In October 1986 AWAS delivers its first aircraft, a Boeing 737-300 to America West Airlines. In 2000 Morgan Stanley Dean Witter acquired AWAS. In March 2006 Private equity firm Terra Firma purchased AWAS and moved its head office to Dublin. In June 2007 AWAS acquired its competitor Pegasus Aircraft Leasing and Financing Company PAFCO of San Francisco.
