Continental West was formed as a division of Texas Air Corp. for the purpose of operating new aircraft outside of Continental's bankruptcy filing. The airline had its own management, but operated using facilities and certificates of Continental. It began service on August 29,1985 linking Los Angeles with Seattle and San Jose.
