Spantax was founded in 1959 as Spanish Air Taxi, an air taxi and charter operator based in Canary Islands. Operations commenced the same year using Douglas DC-3 on flights between Canary Islands and Spanish Sahara supporting oil industry. Spanish Taxis started inclusive tour charters in 1960 using DC-4s and DC-7s. Spantax name was adopted in 1963. In 1972 Spantax introduced first transatlantic charter flights. Spantax entered jet age in February 1967 when it received its first Convair CV-990. Spantax eventually became largest operator of the type. Spantax also used wide-body Douglas DC-10, first of which arrived in October 1978. By this time Spantax became exclusively leisure charter operator serving Europe and America's and West Africa. Airline faced difficult financial situation in late 1980s and had to shut down as it could not find willing investors to keep it afloat. Airline was sold to Aviation Finance Group of Luxembourg year before its demise, but all attempts to revive fledgling airline failed.
