Nordic Airways was formed following the SAS acquisition of Nordic Airlink. That airline was split into two, with SAS keeping low-cost Nordic Airlink, and Nordic Leisure becoming a private company. The new airline offered both domestic flights and international charters, with domestic flights marketed as Nordic Regional. In January 2006, the Nordic Airways brand was adopted for both divisions. Due to financial problems, the airline lost its license in January 2009. Its successor was Air Sweden, which began operations in December 2009.
