AGS IV Air Gambia Atlas Gambia

note

Scheduled passenger airline commenced operations in 1991 on Freetown - Banjul - London route using leased Boeing 707. McEvaddys brothers, men behind Omega Air a Boeing 707 specialists, held 40% stake in Air Gambia. In June 1992 an ambitious route Freetown - Banjul - New York was planned, but US authorities turned airline's request down due to safety concerns. Similar situation occured in June 1993 when British CAA withdrew its permit for Air Gambia's 707s to fly to UK. Although Air Gambia's 707s were maintained by Florida West Airlines of Miami and had been checked by Manston based Modern Jet Support a 707 specialist and no allegation of wrong doing has been put forth. Gambia Airways owned by the government of Gambia and British Airways just started operations to London prior to Gambian's Aviation Authorities request to withdrew the Air Gambia's permit. Air Gambia switched briefly to leased IL-62 on the route, but already in bankruptcy proceedings it could not recover.
