American Eagle was created in early 1998 for the purpose of consolidating the three AMR-owned regional carriers. It began operations on April 30, 1998 using the certificates of Simmons Airlines. On the following day, Flagship Airlines was merged into American Eagle, then on June 1, Wings West Airlines was merged. A planned integration of Executive Airlines never took place. On April 15, 2014, it changed its name to Envoy Air to distinguish itself from contracted American Eagle carriers.
