Bangkok Airways is first private airline established in Thailand. Airline was founded as charter operator Sahakol Air.
Sahakol Air became Thailands first private domestic scheduled airline in 1986 and changed its name to present title Bangkok Airways. Bangkok Airways capitalized on growing popularity of Thailand's beaches. Since 1980s it built its own airports in resorts of Samui, Sukhothai, and Trat.
Airline also secured rights to fly international routes to neighboring countries, Singapore and Japan. It currently (2009) serves international destinations Xian, Guilin, Macau, Hiroshima, Yangon, Luang Prabang (Laos), Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore and Male in Maldives. Domestic destinations include Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Sukhotai, Trat, Samui and Krabi.
