note
General Electric Credit Corporation was formed in 1943 as the lending/leasing division of General Electric. In the 1960s it began expanding its business into commercial aircraft. In 1987 its name was changed to General Electric Capital Corporation. In 1993 it acquired some aircraft from ailing Guiness Peat Aviation, and the aircraft business was separated into a separate division, General Electric Capital Aviation Service, which were operated as both US and Irish companies. In July 1994, it acquired Polaris Holding Company, another aircraft lessor. It operates Irish subsidiaries, Celestial Aircraft Trading and Airplanes Holdings Ltd., and a US subsidiary, Aviation Financial Services Inc. In 2021 GE sold the unit to AerCap NV.
