Planet was formed by Peter Garrambone, principal of Cosmopolitan Airlines (later Coastal Express and Federal Airlines), financier Anthony DeCamillis, and promoter Lou Pearlman. The company had incorporated in 1995 with plans to operate Atlantic City casino charters. Although it received DOT authorities in summer 1998, it did not receive its FAA operating certificate until January 2000. In addition to casino charters, much of its business involved government contracts. The airline received scheduled authority in 2001, but never began such operations. In 2004, there was a negotiated acquisition by Planet Holdings Corp., which planned to provide two 757s as replacements for retiring 727s. The merger was called off in January 2005 when it was learned that Planet Holdings principal was a disbarred California attorney, and was also censured by the SEC. Due to financial issues, the airline ceased operations in May 2005.
