note
World Airways was one of USA's oldest charter airlines. Airline's first base of operation was Oakland California. Operations commenced in 1948 using Boeing 314s flying boats. Airline operated from its beginning both passenger and cargo charters and since 1950s provided significant transportation capacity for US military. After demise of ATA, WOA picked up its Air Mobility Command business.
Airline first land airplanes were Douglas DC-4s, DC-6s and Lockheed Constellations.
In 1963, WOA commenced its first overseas charter flights. In July 1963 the first jet aircraft, a Boeing 707, joined the fleet, followed by first wide-body, a Boeing 747, in 1973.
Airline received its first Douglas DC-10 in March 1978. This type became the backbone of its fleet for next three decades.
Airline operated AMC charters, worldwide scheduled cargo flights and charters and ACMI leases for other carriers.
WOA was subsidiary of Global Aviation Holdings Inc. and employed 1,500 people with annual revenue of over $500 million (2008). On March 27, 2014, 2 days short of 66 years in operation, World Airways ceased operations.
In November 2017 US based investment firm, 777 Partners led by Ed Wegel, acquired the intellectual property of World Airways, Inc. with intention to relaunch operations. 777 Partners will base the new World Airways at MIA and LAX as initial operating hubs. Ed Wegel previously led effort to bring EASTERN AIR LINES brand back to the market.
