Regional business airline started operations in May 1993 on Antwerp - London City airport route. Airline has created hub at London City and thanks to the EU airline industry deregulation, is able to offer direct flights to other European capitals, namely Luxembourg and Amsterdam and even destinations within UK like Channel Islands, Manchester, Isle of Man and Jersey. Airline built reputation among traveling public that culminated in being awarded in 2006 "Regional Airline of the Year" title by Air Transport World - Industry's premier publication. In December 2007 Air France - KLM group buys VLM and VLM becomes its subsidiary. Air France-KLM announced on 28 May 2009 that VLM Airlines will gradually start to operate under the brand name CityJet. From 2010 the name VLM Airlines will be replaced altogether by CityJet although both companies would continue to operate independently. As a result, VLM Airlines has replaced its frequent flyer program, VLM Encore, with Air France-KLM's Flying Blue and flyvlm.com has been merged with the CityJet website.
The Belgian company SHS Antwerp Aviation N.V. and Slovenian company VLM Airlines d.d. are subsidiaries of the Dutch investment company SHS Aviation B.V which acquired VLM in 2016. Both companies trade as ‘VLM Airlines’.
SHS Aviation B.V. decicded to dissolve the Belgian airline and to liquidate it. Operations ceased on August 31 2018.
