National airline of Myanmar was formed in 1948 as Union of Burma Airways. Operations commenced on domestic routes the same year with six DeHavilland Dove aircraft. Two years later international service was inaugurated first to Calcutta, Bangkok and Chittangong in Thailand. Kathmandu, Hong Kong, Penang and Singapore were added as airline grew. Airline's first jet was Boeing 727 which was used on airline's Yangon - Bangkok - Hong Kong route since 1969. In 1989 company changed name to Myanma Airways reflecting political change in Burma. Airline stopped international operations in August 1993 following establishment of MAI Myanmar Airways International in which Myanmar Airways held 20% stake with the rest owned by Kanbawza Group. Company serves dense domestic network and also provides ground handling services at Yangon International airport. Rebranded as Myanmar National Airways 2014
