note

National airline of Dubai Emirate. Although founded by the royal family, airline received only start-up capital and a used B727 from the government which is its sole owner. Its arrangement of paying a dividend from its profit, rather than tax is seen as unfair competitive advantage by its competitors. First flight was conducted in October 1985 from company's base in Dubai to Karachi Pakistan using leased A300. In 1987 first A310 was received and Emirates put it on its first European destination - LGW July same year. After the first Gulf War, Emirates emerged as fastest growing airline in region. It offered high level of service to its passengers and gained reputation for reliable cargo deliveries. Emirates was one of the first B777 customers when first of initial order of 7 arrived in 1996. Emirates greatest competitor, neighboring Abu Dhabi Emirate national airline Gulf Air had well developed regional network. Emirates made decision to carve its niche market rather than compete head to head with Gulf Air. Emirates focused on development of long-haul network where B777 excels. In next decade Emirates built preeminent position for itself among the world's top airlines. Rapid development of Dubai into world shopping and leisure destination helped Emirates to achieve staggering growth. By 2007 Emirates carried over 20 million passengers annually on global network that stretched to all continents, transforming Dubai into a major air transportation hub of the world. Emirates employs over 65,000 people.(2017) Emirates made history in Nov 2001 when it signed agreement to purchase up to 15 Airbus A380s, the largest airliner made. In 2005 first non-stop service from a Gulf State to New York was inaugurated. Since then, LAX, SFO, Sao Paulo and Houston were linked with direct flights as well as SYD and MEL in Australia. In August 2008 Emirates put into service its first Airbus A380 on Dubai - New York route. Emirates is the largest A380 (123 ordered) as well as B777 (280+ ordered) operator in the world.
