Airline was formed as charter and air taxi operator Airzena. In 1997 Air Zena started scheduled operations. In November 1999 Air Zena merged with Air Georgia to became flag carrier of Georgia Airzena Georgian Airlines. Year later, Boeing 737-500 leased from Hapag Lloyd became airline's first western aircraft. In September 2007 Canadair CRJ-700 regional jets were introduced and in 2009 first Boeing 737 Next Generation joined the fleet. On October 1st 2004 new identity Georgian Airways was adopted. In 2009 airline operated scheduled flights to Paris, Frankfurt, Vienna, Amsterdam, Athens, Kiev, Dubai, Tel-Aviv, Minsk, Kharkov and Almaty from its hub at Tbilisi.
